LANGKAWI GEOPARK
The entire archipelago of Langkawi was declared "Langkawi Geopark" in 2006 by the UNESCO Global Network of Geoparks. Of the three main areas of interest on Langkawi, it is Mt. Machincang that stands above the rest. Literally.
Mt. Machincang towers more than 700m into the sky and dates back more than 550 million years ago, making it one of the oldest rock formations in the region. It is often touted as the birthplace of South East Asia.
To Lasah, the elephant, it has been home since 2006.
Mt Machincang of Langkawi Geopark
We ride our elephant into the foothills of Mt. Machincang (pix), the 550m year old rock formation that serves as our backdrop. Each riding session will head out into the secondary forests that lines the foothills and is adjacent to the Oriental Village.
Mt Machincang from Langkawi Elephant AdventuresThe largest animals found on the island are wild boar. The largest predator, if the wild boar cannot be considered one, is the clouded leopard. However, and terribly, the last known sighting of the footprint of the clouded leopard dates back more than five years now.
Riding an elephant into the foothills of Machincang offers adventurers the chance to spot a variety of birds, reptiles and a couple species of primates. However, most of these animals–snakes included–would scamper away as the elephant approaches.
