Four-eyed Tigers?

Tigers 101

Ever noticed the white spots on the back of the tigers' ears? All tigers have them, even white tigers.
These white spots serve as "eyes on the back of the tiger's head" in aid of the tiger's defence against predators, who may try to sneak up on the tiger.

Some argue the white spots are meant for cubs to keep their mothers in sight.

THE EXHIBIT
An Unconventional Presentation

Exhibit Concept

Visitors to the Tiger! Tiger! Gallery & Exhibit may view our tiger through a glass wall. At times, only the thickness of the glass separates tiger from our guests(see picture below).

Visitors Observing Zanah at Play

However, to encourage natural behaviour from Zanah, our glass is mirror tinted. This means visitors may even see a sleeping tiger only a meter away. No touching through the glass though!

Cafe Concept

After an year of operations, we invited Bolaven Cafes Langkawi to set-up and manage a cafe within its premises. Guests may now enjoy a cup of excellent coffee while observing Zanah.

Bolaven Cafes was selected as a partner for its own humanitarian efforts of helping poor farmers in southern Laos break the cycle of poverty. For more information, kindly visit Bolaven Farms.

Recycle • Re-use • Re-apply

Another concept we have embraced at the Tiger! Tiger! Gallery & Exhibit is the re-application of discarded but usable building materials.

As a result, Zanah's enclosure is constructed from more than three tonnes of discarded steel from cargo containers. Although not a conventional material used by zoological parks, tigers cannot nevertheless claw at these steel plates as they can climbing trees, making escape impossible.

Electrical power is also derived from the sun via several solar panels that may be seen atop the exhibit walls. Power derived from these solar panels are used to power various electrical and lighting points in and around the Gallery.

Renewable Energy

At least RM25,000 has been allocated towards experimenting with renewable energy such as solar power. Most lighting requirements and several electrical items are powered by several solar panels that may be spotted over the tiger enclosure.

What Visitors May Encounter at Tiger! Tiger! Gallery & Exhibit

Here are some photographs of Zanah in her exhibit on Opening Day, February 14, 2010.

Hand-raised since birth, Zanah remains one of the most–if not the most–tiger in the country. As a testament to her tameness, Zanah may be hand-fed by visitors–whom she has never encountered.
